Hatchback
Gatlinburg, Tennessee
29x37 inch C-print
2008
Though I recently acquired a size-appropriate car for the kind of work
I do, for sixteen years I was wedded to my tiny Honda Civic hatchback,
which I would announce to anyone within earshot was "a lot bigger
than it looks from the outside." This photograph is proof. I loved
working out of the back of this car, though as I got more ambitious in
my shooting, it got more and more crowded back there. This particular
night it was well past three in the morning when I was packing up my gear
to leave (or, as is the case at that time of night, hurling my gear willy-nilly
into the back of the car). Something caused me to access the driver's
seat while I still had the hatch open, and this was what I saw—the
bright lights of a Smoky Mountain tourist town from the Olympian heights
of the surrounding mountains
