Jaye's
Truck
Durham, North Carolina
29x37 inch C-print
2008
We were borrowing a good friend's truck for a few days one winter, and
it happened to be sitting in the driveway in just the right orientation
for the light of the full moon to be hitting the bulk of the truck bed.
As I passed the truck, the moonlight shining just so felt far too
serendipitous and far too beautiful to pass up, though the only thing
I could make out with the naked eye was a dark tangle of rope. When I
saw the processed film, I realized that it was two entirely different
kinds of rope---utterly distinct in tonality and personality. While
I had guessed that rope by moonlight was well worth taking the time to
photograph even if I had no real idea what I was shooting, I never imagined
the subtlety of what was actually there. It took the film's being exposed
for a very long time to the gentle moonlight moving through the sky to
tease out those fine distinctions of rope. The small sulphurous
wedge of light at the top of the frame is a streetlight's gauche counterpoint
to the infinite complexity of moonlight.
