One of the many reasons my friend Nancy and I travel and work so well
together is our mutual understanding of the best way to pass twenty or
forty or sixty minutes while awaiting an exposure. This one I remember
particularly well. In direct violation of my girlfriend's pre-trip admonition
to us both, we did take our lives in our hands by scrambling up the wet,
slippery rocks in the dark to view the night waves crashing on the cliffs
far below us. Later on we mused about which was more important for human
existence— love or mercy. We reached no firm conclusion, but no
doubt we'll take up the question again on some other cliff in some other
storm.
