Milky Way with satellite trail, West Penwith, Cornwall / May 2022 Our Disappearing Darkness / MJ Sharp / Fulbright Project in Cornwall, UK / 2021-2022Oct 4th | Artist Talk @ Shadowbox Studios, part of the Click! Photography Festival, Durham Oct 12th | Installation @ The Fruit, part of the Click! Photography Festival, Durham I’m tickled to be part of the Click! Photography Festival programming this year. The Oct 4th artist talk (Wednesday) and Oct 12th art installation (Thursday) are both concerned with the “Our Disappearing Darkness” Fulbright work from the UK (2021/2022). The artist talk has limited seating (but fabulous free parking!) so they’re asking anyone who’s planning to come to please pre-register. The Oct 12th installation is being hosted by The Fruit and needs no registration, but note that it is one day only, noon—10pm.You’ll want to strategize a bit on parking at the Fruit, as it’s in downtown Durham, but they have handy info about that here. I’m very excited about The Fruit's 10,000 square feet of (mostly) black walls, ceilings, and floors—perfect for this work. And to say the folks at the Fruit have been generous, welcoming, and accommodating is the understatement of the century. Further details on both events are at the links. Related to the project, I'd love for you to join in. Here are a few ways: 1) Do you have a favorite literary passage about darkness or night? It could be modern or ancient or anything in between. Someone suggested this wonderful Emily Dickinson poem (late 1800’s), and I’ve always loved this description of Apollo descending to earth in the Iliad, “...the god himself on the march and down he came like night.” (8th century BCE). You get it. Anything is welcome! 2) Want to share the story that you, yourself, have about night or darkness? In my experience, literally *everyone* has one……I’d love to zoom with you and record it for the project. Just email me, and we'll do it! 3) And in the more physical, logistical realm….did anyone get a large portable screen (around 10x12 feet or similar) to watch movies on in your backyard during covid? I’d love to press it into artistic service at the Fruit for a few days (likely Oct 9th-13th). Oct 4th | Artist Talk @ Shadowbox Studios, part of the Click!
