Sailing Patio

My mother probably wished I had never seen the patio furniture stacked and wrapped and protected for the off-season. I kept being drawn to shooting the scene year after year, and out of kindness she sometimes kept it wrapped long past when it made sense to do so. I could be back home as late as April, when the azaleas and dogwoods were in full bloom in East Tennessee and find the patio still wrapped. This particular version was a long exposure done in night rain, with an umbrella shielding the camera. Long exposures in rain can yield beautiful atmospherics to the scene. Because of the long exposure, you never see individual raindrops, but their cumulative effect brings a gossamer, glistening quality to the entire scene.
